Meet Nigeria's Heavyweight Hype-Men

Thanks to the defunct Mo'hits crew, the culture of using hype-men in the Nigerian music scene became more prominent. The then partnership between Don Jazzy and D'banj saw the emergence of many firsts in Naija's music industry of which the use of a hypeman was one.

It was a common sight to see a huge guy come on stage, bounce from one end to another, evoke screams and chants from the audience and generally warm up the crowd before the Kokomaster and other members of the Mo'hits crew made their grand entrance onto the stage.

Special Ed flanked by two of Africa's greatest Wizkid and Davido
That huge guy is Edward Chukwuma-Jiah popularly known as Special Ed, Special Spesh or King Spesh. The big man made the hype business pretty attractive and he currently works with Davido and the HKN Gang as a hypeman and head of corporate sponsorship.
Jimmie
Jimmie Akinsola is a phenomenon. I first knew Jimmie to be an amazing sports presenter on Beat 99.9fm and yes, Jimmie sounded unique and nice. Suddenly, the sports junkie I knew was hosting entertainment programmes such as Industry Night. He was not just hosting those entertainment programmes but was doing great at it. It wasn't long again before I realized that Jimmie had become D'banj's official hypeman.
When on stage, Jimmie brings his A-game always. Aside speaking fluently and inserting interjections here and there while the artiste performs, Jimmie knows how to get a crowd wild and roaring.

Do2dtun doing his thing on stage
On-air personality with Cool 96.9FM, Dotun Kayode popularly known as Do2dtun has a calm demeanor and it does usually come as a surprise when he turns a beast on stage. His energy level is unrivalled and you would at once know he loves his job. From radio to shows, Do2dtun shows so much enthusiasm about what he does. He does great stuff with the Star Trek team while on tour. So great is Do2dtun's hyping skill that he did super-lovely intros for Olamide's 'Baddest Guy Ever Liveth' album and Skales' debut album, 'Man of the Year'
