Buhari's Presidency Will Encourage Coups In Africa - Ajulo

Labour Party’s national secretary, Kayode Ajulo is of the opinion that if the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari emerges Nigeria's next president, it may encourage coup plots in the continent.

In 1983, Buhari as a military officer seized power through a coup d'etat from the civilian government of Shehu Shagari.

"With Buhari as President of Nigeria, other African nations will experience coups because a former dictator will always encourage coup d’etat," Ajulo said.

he All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, would encourage coup plots in Africa if elected the next leader, one of the country's opposition parties says, according to a report.

In a report filed by Naija Centre News, the Labour Party’s national secretary Kayode Ajulo castigated Buhari, saying he was not fit to be the country's leader and urged Nigerians not to vote for him. Ajulo accused Buhari of scuttling the country's democracti rule.

Anti-corruption leader

Buhari seized power in a coup in 1983. He is criticised for throwing his critics - at the time - in jail. He is also said to have kidnapped his enemies off the streets of London, and ordered soldiers to whip citizens who did not queue in orderly fashion at bus stops.

"With Buhari as President of Nigeria, other African nations will experience coups because a former dictator will always encourage coup d’etat," Ajulo was quoted as saying.

However, The Telegraph quoted Buhari’s chief spokesperson Lai Mohammed as saying although Buhari could be a ruthless and ageing former dictator it would be better for the country to be led by him that by "a weak president".

Mohammed said Jonathan had failed to address challenges faced by Nigeria in security, corruption and the economy.

The APC views Buhari as an anti-corruption figure.
