'The Misinterpretation Of Deuteronomy 22 Verse 5' By Farida Adamu

I met a lady in a taxi few weeks back. I was going for rehearsals somewhere in town and I guess she was heading to her place of work or church or something. She gave me a copy of Mirror Woman which I collected quietly and said 'thank you'.

After few minutes, lady started preaching to me on the dangers of trousers;Incurring the wrath of God and having a special portion in hell fire was one or two of her strong points. The third was Deuteronomy 22 verse 5.

"The bible says a woman should not wear a man's clothing. Your heart may be pure but this trouser you are wearing can disqualify you in the eyes of God", she stated firmly and opened her bible to show me the passage.

I waited patiently for her to finish her theory, prove and ten minutes madness so I could start talking sense into her doctrine-washed skull.
Let me not go into details of our conversation with her as that is not what I seek to address.
Deuteronomy 22:5
"The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment for all that do so are an abomination unto the lord thy God"
First point to note here is when this passage of scripture was written even the men themselves were not wearing trousers or had not started wearing trousers. Deutronomy is a book of the law, the fifth book of the bible and torah. These laws date back as 1406 BC during the exodus of the Isrealites and from my little findings I don't think any living being was wearing trousers then. Trousers or trouser-like clothing were introduced by the Romans in 6BC. So I don't know which God told you that he will punish you for wearing trouser.

Secondly, Deutronomy Chapter 22 has 30 verses. Why do speculations rise over verse 5 only? What of the verse that talks about not planting more than one type of crop on your field? What of the verse that talks about not joining wool and silk or different type of clothing together? What of the rest of the verses and chapters? Are they not the laws of God as well? Why are we not living by those laws too?

Moreover Deuteronomy 22:30 says "A man shall not take his fathers wife or discover his father's skirt "
This implies men that men were wearing skirts and so it should be part of their clothing by bible laws.
I could go on and on and on with this but I don't intend writing plenty english. Let every man be accountable gor himself and what he wears.

I think everybody should be left to wear what they are comfortable in. Just because you don't like trousers doesn't mean the one who wears it is a sinner that will go to hell and just because you don't like skirts doesn't make the one who loves to wear it less civilized.

Do what works for you and stop twisting scriptures to your convenience.

I rest my case!
